The technical name for CBD oil is cannabidiol. Most people know it as an active ingredient in hemp. Unlike the more well-known compound, THC, CBD isn’t psychoactive. You can’t get ‘high’ off CBD.
Inside your body, there is a network of cannabinoid receptors which branch out from your brain around the rest of your body. This is called your endocannabinoid system. THC and CBD affect these receptors in different ways. Here’s how;
THC and your CB receptors
Your cannabinoid receptors have all kinds of effects within your brain. Pain, appetite, mood and memory are just some of the functions these receptors can affect. They can be stimulated by endocannabinoids produced by your body, or from external sources such as hemp or cannabis.
THC affects two types of receptors, CB1 and CB2. CB1 is usually to be found in your central nervous system, lungs, liver and kidneys. They perform many different functions, including impacting the production of neurotransmitters, aiding metabolism in your liver, and maintaining your internal environment. They’re also thought to play a part in your levels of concentration, memory and pain threshold.
CB2 can be found in your red blood cells. Their effects are more concerned with your immune system, aiding the disposal of old cells and immune suppression.
CBD hits different receptors
CBD stimulates different receptors from those hit by THC. In fact, CBD stimulates many different receptors. These include serotonin, adenosine and the TRPV-1 receptor. The TRV-1 receptor is particularly interesting as stimulation can affect your perception of pain, internal temperature and inflammation. Adenosine also controls inflation when stimulated, as well as having anti-anxiety effects.
These receptors also influence the release of dopamine and glutamate within your body. Dopamine affects your level of motivation, happiness and motor skills. Glutamate has an effect on your memory and learning skills.
The quantity of CBD that you use impacts the receptors that can be affected. For example, higher quantities of CBD can affect the 5-HT14 serotonin receptor, which can generate anti-depressant outcomes, as well as exerting control over your appetite, sleeping patterns and addiction mechanisms.
Lastly, CBD also blocks CPR55 signalling, which is linked to your blood pressure and control of bone density.
CBD regulates THC
There are examples where rather than working separately within your body, CBD and THC react together.
One example involves the FAAH enzyme. CBD and THC both work this receptor, but it’s the CBD that activates it, minimising the effect that the THC can have. In the end, the psychoactive properties of the THC are minimised.
Because CBD isn’t psychoactive, and can reduce the psychoactive properties of THC, they’re often taken together. You get all of the medical benefits without the disorienting ‘high’. However, we recommend simply using CBD oil, which will have more benefits to your wellbeing in the long run.
